Shaw Charity Classic

September 1 to 3, 2017

The Calgary Police Foundation (CPF) has once again, for the 5th year, been chosen as one of 11 Official Charity Partners representing youth-based charities as a recipient of proceeds from the 2017 Shaw Charity Classic. All proceeds are generated through the Tournament held September 1 – 3, 2017 at Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club.

The CPF is pleased to introduce our Youth Ambassador who will be representing CPF’s six youth-based programs at the Shaw Charity Classic – Phillip Watt. Phil is one story of thousands of young Calgarians that the CPF is having a tremendous impact with in keeping our children safe. This impact is not possible without the critical financial support of programs such as the Shaw Charity Classic. All CPF programs work exclusively with its partner – the Calgary Police Service – and do not receive government funding.

Meet Phil – just one of many CPF success stories

My name is Phillip and I am a graduate of the Youth at Risk Development Program (Y.A.R.D.), one of six programs funded by the Calgary Police Foundation. When I was younger I was breaking into cars, stealing, breaking bus shelters, skipping school and hanging out with the wrong crowd. Doing this made me feel invincible because I got away with it.

It came to an end when I was caught shoplifting at Chinook Mall. Rather than throw me into jail and set my path down a criminal life, Calgary Police did an assessment on me and I was placed in the Y.A.R.D. program. Constable Al was assigned to me. He knew my friends were a bad influence and the first step was to remove me from them. To do this, he found what I was interested in – track and field. He knew training would take up most of my time and take the focus off my friends.

Next were my grades. I was failing every class, but the worst was in English Language Arts, where I had a 19.4%. Constable Al got me a tutor, and my English grade skyrocketed to 84% by the end of the year. I ended up receiving the Reed Improvement award that year which represents the most improved student.

Another thing Constable Al did was to get me into therapy to rebuild my relationship with my mom. It was difficult for my mom and I to communicate because of all the trouble I had caused her. The therapy helped heal our relationship and now we are closer than ever. I continued with Track and Field and my grades improved tremendously each year. I won both city and provincial championships for hurdles in high school.

My life has continued down the road to success. I am currently in my last year of chemical engineering with a minor in petroleum engineering at the University of Calgary and I couldn’t be happier. I am so thankful that I was put into the Y.A.R.D. program, funded by the Calgary Police Foundation. It has truly helped shape who I am today.

Phil will be attending various Shaw Charity Classic events throughout the Tournament and representing the CPF as our Ambassador. He and many like him are the direct benefactors of third party fundraising initiatives such as this professional golf tournament.

On behalf of the Calgary Police Foundation, we express our sincere gratitude to the Shaw Charity Classic for its continued support of organizations such as the CPF that are dedicated to supporting the lives of children and youth in the Alberta community. The CPF is indebted to the organizers of the Shaw Charity Classic.

Because of our relationship with the Shaw Charity Classic, the CPF is very pleased to offer discounted tickets to the Tournament – please see details below.
